Week One

The next daily procedure is an activity called "Dictation."
Dictation simply means writing something as you hear it. In music exploration, the procedure will be that you will hear a musical excerpt, either rhythm or melody
and then write it down on the following form.

Since "clefs" cannot be heard, the dictation for this week will be the same
assignment as Daily Rhythm.

Melody/Dictation Sheet
The first week is spent becoming acquainted with the daily and weekly procedures in class and being introduced to the 6 ingredients of music. Throughout the first quarter time will be spent learning those ingredients as they are the basic structure of music.

A daily requirement that helps to reinforce each ingredient is a daily activity called "Daily Rhythm." Daily Rhythm is the same as "bell work" required at the beginning of other classes. This is what the daily rhythm form looks like:

In the rectangle on top of the form is where students are to write the weekly assignment.
As there are sections from every day of the week, the students are to write a variation of the assignment, everyday.

The people of Ancient Greece used "entertainment" to teach about their culture through enactments of their god’s activities.

This week, we will study what called "The Medieval Period." This time is sometimes called "The Dark Ages" or "The Middle Ages.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, civilization was existing in small groups, villages, bands, etc. Through this transition, which occured over hundreds of years, one of the few, if not the only, organized groups were the people who were associated with Christianity. The rest of the other people throughout Europe were highly superstitious and uneducated. During this time, the development of a "powerful" church created unrest and change among the populations.

This week, we will study "The Renaissance."
The Renaissance was a major historic turning point so it will be studied for 2 weeks.
The crusades brought much change in the way people lived.
The church lost much of its power and people were free to think and create. Renaissance means "rebirth"
which, to many people, meant a rebirth of freedom to think, invent, and question.

This week, we will study "The Baroque Period"This musical period begins around 1600 and ends at about 1750. It has been said that the Baroque period ended when J.S. Bach passed away This was a highly decorative time with much time and money spent on "image."

Dictation Form
This week, we will concentrate on some of the famous composers of the Baroque Period. The people who wrote the music during this time period,
J.S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and George Frederic Handel ) were affected by the activities of the time just as we are today. These artists were, by far, the most influential and had many successes with the music that they wrote.

This period of time is called "Classical." It existed around the years 1750 to 1825. When people hear music from the distant past, they mistakenly call
it "Classical" when it could be from many other musical periods. The early Classical period was called "Rococo" because it was a time when all the excess decorations and spending were at their peak. It was also the time when the revolutions started, i.e. ( The French Revolution and the American Revolution )
Franz Joseph Haydn was one of the lucky musicians who was treated like royalty because he had a job as a court composer. The royal family that
employed him required that he write music for any and every occasion. Other musicians dreamed of having a job like his.

Continuing with the Classical Period, late Rococo, we turn our attentions to the next musical composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart will show many incredible skills during his short life, yet none will get him a job similar to that of Haydn. However, for the short time he lived, Mozart's musical compositions
showed promise and gave much inspiration to future musicians. Haydn may have had the job others wanted but his music did not have as lasting an effect as Mozart's creations.
